Understanding Black dandyism
The 2025 Met Gala theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” It goes hand-in-hand with The Met’s spring exhibition, celebrating the history of Black fashion and dandyism.
So what is Black dandyism?
“It’s really someone who is dedicated to dress, like they see dress as a discipline, in the same way viewing working out as a discipline or studying music as a discipline. So they view it as a discipline, and a lot of the times it shows up in tailored clothes, but… it’s not only people who wear suits, it’s become more casual and I think just more free and fluid,” Complex Editor-in-Chief Aria Hughes told CBS News New York.
The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book,”Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” Miller writes about Black servants in 18th century England, slaves being stripped of their identities when they arrived in America, followed by Emancipation and the expressive styles born from the Harlem Renaissance.Â
“Ultimately, it’s someone who wants to use clothes as armor in a way to impact the way in which people perceive them and fight stereotypes that are sometimes rooted in racism,” added Hughes.

Met Gala tickets raise a record $31 million
The Met Gala raises money for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while celebrating its spring fashion exhibition.Â
Individual tickets cost $75,000, and tables for multiple guests start at $350,000, The Met told CBS MoneyWatch. Ticket prices remain on par with last year.Â
Stars must be invited to attend the gala, and the night’s guest list, along with much of what happens inside, are shrouded in secrecy.Â
The museum’s CEO announced Monday this year’s event had already raised a record $31 million, surpassing last year’s more than $26 million. This is the first time it crossed the $30-million mark.

What to know about the Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Met Gala is held annually at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The museum dates back to the 19th century and is home to more than a dozen different collections featuring tens of thousands of pieces.Â
The Met originally opened to the public in April 1870. It occupies two million square feet between 80th and 84th streets on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.Â
The Met Gala is actually a fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute. The event started out in 1948 as a supper club called “The Costume Institute Benefit.”
Since 1999, the guest list has been controlled by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour. Under her leadership, the event has raised nearly $250 million.
The museum CEO announced Monday this year’s gala has already raised a record $31 million.Â
How long does the Met Gala last?
The Met Gala is a New York City tradition, held each year on the first Monday in May.
The red carpet arrivals kicked off at 5:30 p.m. E.T., and they usually last for several hours.Â
There is no official end time, and stars have been known to show up late, most notably Rihanna.Â
Last year, Zendaya made a surprise return on the red carpet with a second look in the 9-o-clock hour.Â
Once the stars make their way up the Met steps and into the museum, there is a party inside dinner and music. They also have a chance to check out the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition before it officially opens to the public on May 10.Â
