Thanking voters for handing the National Democratic Alliance a landslide mandate in Bihar Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said every household in the state must be preparing Makhana Kheer to celebrate.

Makhana, a renowned superfood with countless health benefits, has been mentioned by PM Modi on several earlier occasions as well. So here’s how it is made and why it is so good for you.

Ingredients Required For ‘Makhana Kheer’

Makhana kheer is incredibly simple to prepare. You will need:

  • 2 cups of makhana
  • 1 litre of milk
  • 1 tablespoon of ghee
  • 4-5 tablespoons of sugar (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon of cardamom powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons of chopped cashews and almonds
  • a few strands of saffron (optional)
  • a handful of raisins

How To Make ‘Makhana Kheer’?

  1. Begin by heating a tablespoon of ghee in a pan and roasting the makhana on a low flame until they turn crisp and lightly golden.
  2. Break one to check; if it snaps easily, it is perfectly roasted.
  3. In a separate pan, bring the milk to a boil, then lower the flame and let it thicken gently.
  4. Add the roasted makhana and allow them to cook in the milk for 10-12 minutes. The makhana will soften, swell, and release their flavour into the milk.
  5. Next, add the cashews, almonds, raisins, and cardamom powder.
  6. If you prefer, stir in a little saffron milk for extra aroma and colour.
  7. Let the kheer simmer for another 5-7 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  8. Reduce the heat, add the sugar, and stir for a minute or two until it dissolves but do not overcook after adding sugar.

Your Makhana Kheer is now ready to serve! Enjoy it warm or chilled, as you prefer.

As delightful as it tastes, its real charm lies in its remarkable nutritional value. Makhana is rich in protein, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants, all while being wonderfully light and easy to digest. So what are you waiting for? Try it now!
